Freelance Feature Writers

Terrific opportunity for professional journalists who like to dig into a subject and pull out the story behind the headlines. We are looking for competent freelance writers who are equally as good developing stories through telephone interviews or on in-person assignments. Your focus will be to tell the human story of how survivors and communities rebuild their lives following incidents of public violence.

While the national media focuses on high profile incidents of violence, primarily those involving guns, the Center was founded to become a clearinghouse to share what occurs in the weeks and months after violence has occurred instead of focusing on the event itself.

Your responsibilities will include gathering factual information, conducting interviews, writing articles for national distribution.

Qualifications/Experience
Selected journalists will be experienced in writing breaking and general assignment news on deadline with a strong human interest tilt. A minimum of two years experience as a daily news reporter with the ability to work independently under short and multiple deadlines is preferred. Prior on-the-scene exposure to incidents of public violence, police beats, and familiarity with nonprofit and social justice organizations are all highly desirable. Must possess BS or BA degree in English, humanities or journalism.

What You Can Expect
Your first stories will be entirely based on telephone interviews (unless an incident occurs nearby) while we get to know your skills. (Writing about public violence recovery has a bit of a learning curve as you get to know the process.) Journalists who are able to produce tightly written articles on deadline, will receive regular assignments.

How to Apply
E-mail your resume and URLs at [email protected] showing samples of your writing. (No telephone calls please.)
